Seems fine on Android.

Digital Eclipse and the Interactive Documentary

Hi all, I made a post on this topic over on the NintendoLife forums, not realizing that the forums and comments of Hookshot sites aren't unified, so I hope it's okay if I make one over here as well. I don't want to delete the other thread, as it got a thoughtful response from someone, but I also feel that it might generate more discussion over here. I also may be hoping for too much from a niche topic on a niche site, haha. Oh well. I just like talking games.

Here's the original post. I'll paste the contents below:

"I recently completed Atari 50 and its DLC and I gotta say, I'm so impressed with the whole "interactive documentary" idea. What an awesome concept!

If you don't know, Digital Eclipse has been in the emulation and game compilation business for years and they're rightfully acclaimed for their accuracy and attention to detail. With the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection and SNK 40th Anniversary Collection, they set the games on a timeline and provided bits of context like concept art and info blurbs to give the player a fuller, chronological picture.

Then in Atari 50, they incorporated video interviews, even more archival media, and a museum-like presentation. As you follow the timeline, you're given the option to jump in and play a multitude of games, unreleased prototypes, and even some reimagined entries and community-made homebrew titles! They give you piles of context and you decide how much or how little to take with you into the games. Personally, knowing the drama and genius behind some of this stuff made the games far more interesting, and thus the collection far more fun.

Now they have their Gold Master Series, which is currently comprised of The Making of Karateka, Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story, and Tetris Forever. Each title wants to add to this idea of comprehensive, engaging, completely rad game history education and I'm so down for it; I can't wait to check them out.

So I wanted to ask, for my first forum post (please let me know if I messed something up 🙏), who else has thoughts about Digital Eclipse, the Gold Master Series, and/or the preservation and curation of games this way? Are they going in a direction you like or do you have reservations? What series or companies would you like to see get this treatment?

Off the top of my head, I can think of two I'd love to see: HAL Labs and LucasArts (the adventure games, specifically). And I know what you're thinking: "How are they ever gonna get Sakurai on camera to talk about Kirby?" Tricky, yes, but if they can find a way, it'd be an utterly fascinating experience 😉. And the more ways I can learn about Monkey Island, Grim Fandango, and SCUMM, the better, as far I'm concerned."

@Dogorilla responded:

Dogorilla wrote:

I haven't yet played any of these compilations but I definitely want to, I love the concept and it seems like the historical context would make things like early Atari games much more enjoyable. Lucas Arts would be a great addition! Bitmap Brothers would be good too, I've never actually played any of their games but they seem to have a good reputation.

That led me to this picture:

...and now I'd also be interested in knowing more about these guys, haha. Both to hear their stories and to fill in my (very lacking) knowledge of the UK home computer gaming scene.

Any thoughts?

Recommend an SNK fighter for me to play in October

I'm in the mood for a bit of a challenge!

My plan for October is to play an SNK (Neo Geo) fighter every day for 30-45 minutes to see if I actually get any better at it by the end of the month...

...but I need your recommendations on which one to choose! I've never really played any of them much so I'd be coming at all of them pretty much new. I've left plenty of time before the start, so if you'd like to recommend a game please do. The game with the most recommendations is the one I'll pick. In case of a draw I'll pick one at random.

If I can figure out how I may upload day 1 and day 31 as a record of progress (or otherwise) to YouTube or somewhere.

Could Perifractic actually buy Commodore?

I assume this story will make the rounds to the various retro sites eventually. He dropped a Part 1 vid 2 days ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lN8r4LRcOXc

TLDR: it just sets up the cliffhanger that the current IP holder may want to sell him the Commodore brand. Now we get to wait for part 2 to find out if it's legit and could happen. But, I'm really curious where/how he'd get the money. In his vid he covers a lot of the sums that have been spent by various companies to acquire the IP. I wouldn't guess the current holder is going to not want to make some money off their investment since they haven't really seen any profit from licensing deals.

I'm all for this, if only for Perifractic to actually launch a business to support the community, and maybe be able to launch/support 3rd party protects to further extend the retro community for C=64. It's not clear if this would include Amiga IP. In the vid it sounds like the Amiga brand wouldn't be included. I didn't know it was split off, and he didn't cover it specifically.

Gotta keep an eye out for part 2.

ZX Spectrum uses

The recent article on the lack of a game crash outside of the US got me thinking about how I perceive the ZX Spectrum. How were these used on a day-to-day basis? I've always thought of it as a game console because I only think and hear of it in terms of games. I've never used one myself and I can't imagine using a membrane keypad for word processing or other non-gaming applications.

So people who had a ZX Spectrum in the home: how did it get used?

Article in question: https://www.timeextension.com/news/2025/03/poorly-analyzed-us-centric-garbage-why-do-americans-keep-ignoring-european-gaming-history

For reference, I'm an American born in '83, had Atari 2600, 7800, Genesis, and always had an IBM Compatible PC from 1990 onward. It was purchased for business purposes (Dad was treasurer for a local non-profit) but we used it in evenings for games, school work, BBSs, and usenet.

PocketStation - The big Guide

The Pocketstation is the odd one out in PlayStation land as it's the system that gets almost no coverage.

Well I want to do something about that! Ever since getting FFVIII and seeing the manual document a whole in game mode that required the device, it felt that in Europe, we were not getting the full PlayStation experience.

So anyway, there is not a lot of footage or information out there on it, so I thought do an actual hardware capture on the PocketStation & FFVIII so you can all see what we've been missing out on.

I've also recorded 9 other games and their PocketStation functions as well as capturing the mini games and functions of the PocketStation.

Hope you enjoy it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfwcpXdjnbY

Are video games cool now?

Growing up in the ’90s, I was cautious about bringing up video games with other kids. Plenty of us played, but talking about it at school could get you labeled a nerd. It was like watching Pokémon or Dragon Ball Z—lots of kids did it, but you had to pretend you didn’t.

These days, social norms feel much more accepting. Rappers reference Naruto, PS5s are in living rooms instead of basements, and I have no problem telling my wife I’m playing Elden Ring for a few hours.

Do you think gaming and “nerd culture” have become more mainstream, or is it just about growing up and becoming more confident?

Playdate Games

Playdate is slowly building up a catalog of great games and this may be a good place to talk about some of them. I think the best games for Playdate take advantage of its small form factor, not intended for 2 hour gaming sessions, but playing it throughout the day for 10-20 minutes at a time.

Bloom was a visual novel/relationship sim/business sim with a real-time clock and time delay between events that would give you reason to check in every now and then with no consequence for waiting too long.

Voidblazers is a narrative-based vertical SHMUP that I ended up playing through 5 times so I could unlock all the items and thereby unlocking all the dialog. The ship upgrades are collected early, the rest of the items are things that prompt the loveable characters to talk interact and talk. It’s not too difficult and has assist options if you just can’t get past something. Also, the entire soundtrack is full of bangers!

Echo: The Oracle’s Scroll, a chill exploration-focused metroidvania. Reminds me a bit of the Momodora series but without the combat. It does suffer slowdown which made some of the obstacles impossible to beat if your RAM hadn’t been cleared. A recent update improved that so there’s less slowdown.

Next 2 games in the queue are Initial Daydream and The Heist of the Argonaut Limited.

Atari 2600/7800 cartridges in shops
