'Final Fantasy Mystic Quest' Just Got A New Playable Demo For Your Sega Mega Drive / Genesis

The fanmade demo covers the opening sections of the game.

An unofficial Mega Drive / Genesis port of the RPG Final Fantasy Mystic Quest (otherwise known as Mystic Quest Legend in Europe and Final Fantasy USA: Mystic Quest in Japan) is currently in the works, from a couple of fan developers named NicoMegadrive and Laurent Crouzet.

Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, as many of you will no doubt already know, was a Final Fantasy spin-off that Square developed for the SNES back in the early '90s, and was designed to introduce more North American players to the RPG genre. However, despite some fairly enthusiastic reviews from places like Electronic Gaming Monthly and Electronic Games, it ultimately went on to fail in its mission, earning a reputation in more recent years as one of the series's weaker entries, due to its simplicity compared to other games in the series.

Read the full article on timeextension.com

Mortal Kombat Kollection Devs Still Won't Say If This SNES "Holy Grail" Could Be Included

'Mortal Kombat Nitro' is an unreleased, uncensored version of the classic fighter.

Back in June, when Digital Eclipse announced it was working on a new collection bringing together a bunch of Mortal Kombat games from across the series's history, many fans' imaginations went wild with all the possibilities of titles that could potentially be added to the collection in the future.

One title, in particular, that proved to be high up on the community wishlist for the game was hopes of a proper commercial release of Mortal Kombat Nitro — a cancelled follow-up to the SNES port of Mortal Kombat that aimed to be a less sanitized alternative with additional improvements, characters (Goro, Shang, Reptile, and Kung Lao), and other bonus features. The developer Digital Eclipse, however, seems to be staying quiet about the possibility of this.

Read the full article on timeextension.com

Game Changer: Super Castlevania IV - Why Simon Belmont's 16-bit Debut Is A Stone-Cold Classic

Bloody brilliant.

Those of you who have been reading this site for a while may have realised that I'm a huge, huge Castlevania fan. Konami's vampire-hunting series is, without a doubt, my favourite of all time, and I consider several Castlevania titles to be among my favourite games of all time.

However, despite this intense level of affection, my love affair with Castlevania didn't start at the beginning. The first game in the franchise I played was Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge on the Game Boy, and while I loved it (it's probably my favourite Game Boy title), it wasn't the entry which turned me into a committed 'vania fan – that distinction belongs to the sublime Super Castlevania IV (plain old Akumajō Dracula in Japan).

Read the full article on timeextension.com

Feature: "Like A Completely New Game" - The Untold Story Behind Prince Of Persia's Impressive SNES Port

"We paid special attention to the death scenes...".

Following its original release on the Apple II computer back in 1989, Broderbund and Jordan Mechner's cinematic platforming classic Prince of Persia went on to receive countless ports to other machines. However, very few of these are as well regarded as its 1992 Super Famicom/SNES port from the developer Arsys Software.

Going far beyond just being a simple retread of the Apple II adventure, it ended up expanding the title in a bunch of exciting ways, introducing new bosses (including the six-armed titan Ashura and the female warrior Amazon) and new levels, as well as increasing the time limit from one hour to 120 minutes to make up for all these added features. As a result, I've always been curious to know more about its development, and what went into bringing the title to the Nintendo platform.

Read the full article on timeextension.com
