I finally finished AC6 and really loved it. I want to go back and play the whole series from the beginning at some point.

There's a really great retrospective analysis series of videos about each game by a Youtuber named AesirAesthetics. Really worth a watch.

I think Master of Arena has always been the definitive PS1 generation release by the sound of things. Like the first game was very campaign focused and rough around the edges, with the second game having a difficult campaign and really getting overshadowed by it's sequel when it comes to arena and multiplayer.

To me this was important information to gather on these as I was curious about the PS1 trilogy but didn't really want to play through all 3 games, they were more of a curiosity than anything. Always seemed like simply downloading MoA for my first gen AC fix was the way to go.

Great analysis on this franchise though! The breakdown on the PS2 era games would be helpful if I want to check them out.

nice summary of the series. i have only played through the first entry to completion and really enjoyed it (that final boss fight was intense). got my first taste of the series with the old PS1 demo disc back in the day like the user above. i am a bit surprised to see armored core 6 ranked so low considering all the praise it received?... at any rate, before i get to that, i want to at least play all the mainline entries — i'm good to skip the side games. so that leaves ac 2, 3, 4, and 5! i've also been going through the front mission series — i'm on fm 4 now. i feel like these two franchises couldn't be any more different from a gameplay perspective (with the exception of fm evolved), but the setting and vibes compliment eachother nicely.

I'm going to be that guy. My main (and only) experience with Armored Core was from the PS1 packed in demo disc that had the 1st game in it. If I remember correctly, it was just one level and there wasn't much to it other than just shooting stuff. Needless to say, I played the HELL out of it. Over and over again (like the rest of the games on that demo disc). I remember I had intentions of playing the real game but got so deep into games like Resident Evil 2, Vigilante 8, FF7, etc. in that era that I completely forgot about it.

Great writeup! I started playing this series back on the PSX when a friend had a copy of the first game, and intermittently popped back in over the years since. Consequently, though I have a lot of affection for the franchise, I think I've only ever played AC1, AC2, AC4A, and AC6. I'll have to check out 3, 5, and some of the others someday!
